born and raised in Istanbul, Ayşe Gülsüm Özel studied fine art/ stage and costume design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee and completed her studies in animation. She is based in Berlin and works freelance, realizes videos, stage and costume designs on the theater stages, produces experimental videos. Her work uses digital and theatrical illusions simultaneously and offers a multimedia experience. Splitting and overlaying formats from the exhibition context and the performing arts, she seeks for progressive forms. Thematically and aesthetically, she ties in with her transcultural heritage and works on political issues that bring forth her crossover biography and her nomadic life.

In 2016, She was nominated with Peter Scior together with the interdisciplinary musical production "Töt 'Erst sein Weib" in the Nuremberg Opera House for the best stage design of the season by "Die Deutsche Bühne". Her activities in the field of film and video led to participation in the 67th Berlin International Film Festival as a Berlinale Talent and with her video work she received a grant from The Corporation of Yaddo NY/USA in 2019. Most recently, the artistic-scientific video paper “City as a Medium, City as a Museum”, which I put together with Dr. Dilara Tekrin, presented in July 2021 at the International Association for Media and Communication Research conference flow34 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Since the summer semester of 2023, she has been working as an academic collaborator at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart in the Department of Stage and Costume Design
